TBI Social Action

The mission of the Social Action Committee is to make Judaism's commitment to the principles of Tikkun Olam an integral part of everyday life within the temple. The committee organizes projects and events that educate the congregation and provides meaningful experiences through which we can repair our world.

Annually, the committee organizes, or participates in, the High Holy Day Food Drive, Mitzvah Day, the Sixth Night Of Chanukah appeal, Thanksgiving Feast, Walk for the Hungry, the Organizational Faire, a Social Action Shabbat and the Tallit and Tuna food program.

Highlights of this year₼s Social Action Committee:

TBI is a synagogue partner of Jewish World Watch which works to mobilize synagogues, their schools, their members and the community to combat genocide and other egregious violations of human rights around the world through education, advocacy, and refugee relief. Through our ongoing sales of green bracelets (available in the temple lobby), TBI donates money to purchase solar cookers for the refugee camps and school backpacks that provide needed supplies and hope for children living in the refugee camps.

How many Jews does it take to change a light bulb? Wouldn₼t you if you could conserve energy and help stop global warming in one simple step? CFLs use up to 75% less energy than incandescent light bulbs, while lasting approximately eight times longer. These bulbs which now produce a warmer light are for sale in the Temple Office at discounted prices from COEJL (Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life), an organization that deepens the Jewish community's commitment to the stewardship of creation and mobilizes the resources of Jewish life and learning to protect the Earth and all its inhabitants.

Committee members include: Marv Abrams, Steven Brint, Jerry Fenning, Reese Fenning, Marilyn Lubarsky, Brenda Rosenfeld, Jack Schuster, David Steinberger, Ethel Steinberger (Chair), JulieAnn Steinberger (committee artist), Elaine Weller, and Andy Weissman.
